Music Tuition

As a dedicated teacher and keen music educator, I have been teaching since 1999. I taught privately at home and at a specialist music school while in Auckland. Since living in the UK I have continued to teach privately, coach and inspire young and mature musicians.

My philosophy on instrumental teaching is providing an inspirational and enjoyable experience for my students that will enhance their musical journey and enrich their musical training and development. I aim to provide each student musical understanding and develop reliable technical skills, enabling them to progress well. Understanding the psychological side of training, I believe in providing positive feedback and support for my students, helping them to develop their own musical identity, and catering for their individual needs.

With over 20 years of private and instrumental class teaching, I have a sound understanding of the practical environment of musicians in their formative and mature years. I have gained the flexibility to work with any age group.
I am compassionate towards my students and offer healthy learning skills to make each student gain the best in themselves and enjoy music making to the best of their ability.

Cello Lessons - I teach all ages from beginners to advanced level. Preparation for all ABRSM cello examinations.

Piano Lessons -  I teach all ages from beginners up to ABRSM grade 5 level. I also incorporate music theory, aural and improvisation into piano lessons, as this is essential for musical development and understanding.

Music Theory Tuition - I teach music theory for all ages, and prepare students for ABRSM music theory examinations up to grade 6.

Location - I generally teach locally in Hampton, London. However, I'm happy to travel up to 10km to students' homes if I have the time available.

Practise Tips for Parents

  • establish a regular practise routine. This might be 10 minutes before school or after school.

  • Be sure every practise session has an aim to start with.

  • Keep practise sessions short (especially if a beginner).

  • Need general motivation and stimulation (perhaps create a practise sheet and give little rewards). Attend live performances for kids.

Testimonials

"Andrea is such a wonderful music teacher. I have been learning the cello for a year and a half now and thoroughly enjoy it. Andrea is so patient and understanding and you can be sure she will take things at your own pace. She is very encouraging and believes in me. We also have lots of fun. Andrea is the best teacher - ever!"
- Zoë (aged 11)

"Andrea has been teaching my 7 year old son since he was 4 3/4 years old. She passed the initial meeting and my son said that she was 'the one'. He has since been inspired by watching her perform. She is a consistent, kind, inspiring, patient, encouraging and motivational teacher. She has been able to enlarge on whatever interest my son has shown in his cello playing, or in a particular piece of music. She has found pieces to match his personality and style and even if at first they might seem daunting, he is thrilled when they come together. She is far more aware of his capabilities than he is. She has been able to weave theory into the lessons in a seamless manner and Ryan is an able sight reader because of it. He looks forward to his weekly cello lesson enormously and Andrea has maintained his love for cello and playing. I have no hesitation in recommending Andrea as an excellent cello teacher."

- Ann (mother of 7 year old student)

I very much enjoy my cello lessons with Andrea.  As an (extra) mature student, I was not sure whether to start learning to play the cello but Andrea has given me confidence from the beginning. She is extremely patient and sensitive to my capabilities and limitations.  I feel stretched but not overwhelmed.  She is also very focused and I always feel as though I have an interesting and satisfying lesson. On top of all that it is wonderful to hear her play.”
