Andrea Mundy Professional Cellist and Teacher
Biography
Andrea is a freelance orchestral and chamber musician, teacher and recording artist based in the UK.
Born in Auckland, NZ, Andrea graduated from the University of Auckland in 2004 with a Bachelor of Music, where she received the university’s Arts and Culture award for excellence in music performance in both 2003 and 2004. She furthered her studies at the University of Waikato with an Honours degree in cello performance under James Tennant, receiving especially high marks in chamber music. In 2008, she was awarded the Greta Ostova Violoncello Scholarship and completed a Masters degree at the University of Auckland. That same year she went on to study at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where she joined the class of Karine Georgian and Raphael Wallfisch. She also studied orchestral works with BBC Philharmonic cellist Peter Dixon, and performed in many of the school’s orchestras and chamber groups before obtaining her Masters of Music (RNCM) degree in 2010. As a student, Andrea has had the opportunity to perform in cello masterclasses with Ralph Kirshbaum, Raphael Wallfisch, Steven Isserlis, Christoph Henkel and Louise Hopkins.
Since the age of nine, Andrea has dedicated most of her musical life to orchestral performance. In 2007 she was accepted for the Lady Manchester Internship with the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, in which she performed under well established international conductors such as Tecwyn Evans, Ekkehard Stier, Kirill Karabits and Benjamin Zander. Since living and studying in the UK, she has worked with various freelance orchestras including the Northern Lights Symphony Orchestra, London Firebird Orchestra and the London Arte Chamber Orchestra.
A passionate performer of chamber music, she has performed at various international chamber music festivals including Te Anau Music festival, Charterhouse International Music Festival, London Thames Music Festival, Vilnius Chamber Music Festival, the Notting Hill May Fest, and has also performed at the NZ Embassy in Paris with a NZ piano quartet. Since 2011 she has worked with various chamber groups and has been fortunate to tour Lithuania with the Orphic Piano Trio. She is now one-half of the cello duo, Cello2ette, in London.
A versatile cellist, Andrea is dedicated to playing new works and has given world premiers of contemporary works by NZ composers David Adlam and Robin Toan, Lithunanian composer Bronius Kutivicius and English composers Paul Carroll and Martin Seager. She has also performed and recorded with pop bands, playing on the TV show Stars in Their Eyes (2008), recording a music video with Josh Groban (2013) and performed with Josephine and The Artizans (2013) and Stormzy (2018). She has also worked and recorded with Charles Hazlewood for BBC6music and the London Film Orchestra.
Her cello, made by Noel Sweetman, is a copy of the Montagnana 1739 “Sleeping Beauty” cello, and its purchase was made possible through the amazing support of her parents.
In her spare time, Andrea likes to keep fit with her favourite sports, running and road cycling, and loves escaping to the beach for a kayak in the sea.
She is full member of the Incorporate Society of Musicians (ISM) and the European String Teachers Association (ESTA).
